The Natura 2000 network site of "KOILADA KEDRON-KAMPOS" (CY2000008) is located inside the Pafos State Forest and is part of the larger Special Protection Area CY2000006. The site is at the west part of the Troodos range, 102 Km from Nicosia, 85 Km from Limassol and 57 Km from Pafos. Within the boundaries of the 'KOILADA KEDRON-KAMPOS' site the villages of Tsakistra and Kampos tis Tsakistras are found, together with Panagia village at the northwest.
The site covers an area of 18.258 ha of woodland and mountainous landscape with rivers and streams dissecting the site from the higher peaks to the lower parts. The entire site is a State Forest, encompassing a variety of habitat types, and managed by the Department of Forests. The largest part of the site (86%) is covered by the habitat type 9540 (Mediterranean pine forests with endemic Mesogean pines). Twelve more natural habitat types of Annex I Directive 92/43/EEC occur within the site, such as the endemic habitat types 9590* (Cedrus brevifolia forests) and 9390* (Scrub and low forest vegetation with Quercus alnifolia), as well as the priority habitat types 5220* Arborescent matorral with Zyziphus) and 6220* (Pseudo-steppe with grasses and annuals of the Thero-Brachypodietea).
The diverse landscape of the site and its extended natural habitat types host a large number of important flora and fauna species, providing shelter, food and nesting sites. The site hosts 36 endemic plant taxa of Cyprus, out of which three are included in Annex II Directive 92/43/EEC. One of them, *Arabis kennedyae, is a priority species. Moreover, the site includes important fauna species; the avifauna of the site comprises 97 bird species, out of which 22 are listed in Annex I Directive 2009/147/EC. Also, the site is one of the most important habitats of the endemic mouflon, Annex II Directive 92/43/EEC, Ovis orientalis ophion (=O. gmelini ophion). Additionally, the site supports a good population of the endemic, priority Annex II Directive 92/43/EEC snake, Hierophis cypriensis.
Remarkably, the targeted site "KOILADA KEDRON-KAMPOS" (CY2000008) constitutes an important habitat for the natural heritage of Cyprus, combining endemic species of the island in a unique manner. Such species are the already mentioned
Cedrus brevifolia and *
Arabis kennedyae, as well as the plant species
Arabis cypria,
Erysimum kykkoticum and
Ranunculus kykkoensis. Furthermore, the endemic species of the area include the wild sheep (
Ovis orientalis ophion) and the
Hierophis cypriensis,
Otus scops cyprius,
Periparus ater cypriotes,
Phoenicolacerta troodica,
Hemiechinus auritus dorotheae and
Garrulus glandarius glaszneri (

The visitor of the site "KOILADA KEDRON-KAMPOS" (CY2000008) and its surrounding area can enjoy picnic sites, as well as nature trails (forest recreations), while the European trail E4 crosses the core patch of habitat type 9590*. In addition, the only Museum of Forests in the island (located in Kampos village), as well as the Kykkos Monastery which also hosts an interesting folklore Museum, are located within the targeted site.
The current project focuses on this Natura 2000 site, since it is the only Natura 2000 site in Cyprus and Europe, where the priority habitat type 9590 *Cedrus brevifolia forests (Cedrosetum brevifoliae) occurs. Therefore, the importance of this area for the targeted habitat type is of utmost importance. Through management activities, carefully designed for this habitat type and taking into account the current threats and pressures, the project seeks to ensure the long-term conservation of the targeted habitat.
